Palakkayam Thattu is almost 56 Kilometers (34.8 Miles) away from Kannur Town. Nearest towns are Naduvil and Pulikurumba. To reach the top of Palakkayam Thattu you can either trek uphill or hire a taxi Jeep which will cost almost ₹200. After the Jeep ride, we should walk another 500 meters to reach the top of the mountain.

Reaching there you will be witnessing one of the most picturesque spots in Kerala. The birds eye view of green hills around with the biodiversity of western Ghats attracts many tourists to here.  At the top of the hill, walkways are set up by the Tourism Promotion Council, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of Kannur. This is one of the best spots for Photographers, Trekkers, and Nature Enthusiasts in Kerala. The view of sunset from here is magnificent.

Palakkayam Thattu is located at  50 km from Kannur and 28.5 km from Taliparamba. The nearest national highway is at Taliparamba is National Highway 66 which connects Goa and Mumbai in the north and Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in the South. The nearest town is Naduvil. When Driving from Kannur, The shortest route (55.8 km) is Kannur- Taliparamba – Oduvally – Naduvil – Mandalam – Palkkayam Thattu. When Driving From Taliparamba, another route is Taliparamba – Sreekandapuram – Chempanthotty – Naduvil – Palakkayam Thattu.  The nearest Railway station is Kannur Railway Station (CAN). The nearest Airports are  Kannur International Airport (CNN) and  Mangalore International Airport (IXE). If you Prefer Public Transport, KSRTC is operating several buses from Kannur and Taliparamba to Naduvil. Palakkayam Thattu Climate

Palakkayam Thattu receives a good amount of rainfall throughout the year. It will be better if you avoid visiting here during rainy season. Even though tourists visit here irrespective of season, there are two active tourist seasons. If you are a photographer, the best time to visit Palakkayam Thattu is the monsoon,  June to October. At this period one can witness mist covered mountains and never ending greenery with little showers. Remember to wear good shoes which completely covers your foot to protect against the leeches. As a result of the monsoon rains, the grasses grow to the walkways, which makes walking difficult. By the end of November, the paths will be cleared and trekkers can easily pass through the grasses. The second tourist season is January to March. At this time, The sun might be a little harsh, so take care before setting out for trekking. Always carry water with you. In evenings, the climate will be cool and calm so Palakkayam Thattu is great place to spend an evening.

Things to be Taken Care of

  • Try to reach there in the proper time only. Which is before 10 AM or after 4 PM. Otherwise the area will be too Sunny.
  • There are many ways to reach Palakkayam Thattu, This may feel confusing to many people. Use Google Maps Navigation or hire a Taxi, if you are uncertain about the route.
  • Some roads to Palakkayam Thattu includes steeply inclined paths, So make sure that your vehicle is fit for such conditions if you plan to bring one.
  • Please do not drop plastic and other items in the area. Make use of trash cans provided there.
  • Take extra care not to slip off while riding two wheeler if it rains.
  • The area is under the supervision of security guards all the time, Feel free to ask anything about the place to them.

Palakkayam Thattu has two entry points with police guards. The Gates opens at 6 AM and remains open till 10 PM. It will be better if you park your car downhill and use a jeep to go uphill. The Jeep drivers are friendly and helpful. If you have a heavy duty vehicle and some experience in harsh driving conditions, you can try going uphill. The width of the road is less, so that take care while driving.  Kids and elder people are requested to make use of a local jeep to ensure their safety.
