Chembra Peak Travel Guide

Chembra peak situated near meppadi wayanad is a prardise for trekkers and nature lovers. With an altitude of 6900 feet from sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad district. Chembra peak is a part of  western Ghats, a mountain range which passes through the eastern border of Kerala.

Once you reach the top of Chembra peak, You will be witnessing the panoramic view of entire Wayanad district, the Nilgiris and parts of Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. The heart shaped lake, commonly called as ‘hridayathadakam’ which is another major tourist attraction of wayanad, is situated on the way to chembra peak. You will need a permission from Meppady forest office to trek up the chembra peak.

You can visit the forest office at meppady and get a pass for trekking to chembra peak for 750 rs for a group of 10 people and for international tourists, the cost will be 1500 per 10 people. If you carry a camera, another rs 40 should be paid. The area is plastic free, so you should deposit rs 20 for each plastic bottle you carry uphills and upon reaching back, you can show the bottles and get your money back.

Chembra peak is situated almost 5 kilometers away from meppady town, and 25 kilometers away from Kalpetta. Kalpetta is a major town at Wayanad. The nearest national highway is NH212 (Kollegal – Mysore – Kozhikode). It is at a distance of 11 kilometers from Meppady. Nearest Airport is Calicut International Airport (CCJ) (102 km). Wayanad District has no railway transport facility.

Chembra peak attracts trekkers round the year, but it will be better if you avoid visiting in monsoon. In monsoon the paths will be quite difficult to pass through and the rocks will be slippery.

 

The ticket counter opens at 7 am in the morning and it will be open till 2 pm afternoon. If interested, you can avail a guide from the ticket counter. If there are chances of rain, you might be requested to leave the place and reach meppady by afternoon 3-4 pm. If it rains, it will be very difficult to trek down the hill as the paths will be slippery. Camping is not allowed in chembra peak as of now.

Update: Now, Trekkers are allowed only till the heart shaped lake. The authorities have blocked the trekking to the hop of the peak due to the presence of maoists in the area.
